There’s a sweet spot every year in the Texas Hill Country — that stretch from mid-September through October when the triple-digit heat finally breaks, the lake traffic thins out, and the whole region feels like it’s exhaling. If you’re staying with us at Homestead Cottages, this is one of our favorite times to recommend to guests. Here’s how to make the most of it.
Get Out on (or Near) the Water — Before It’s Too Cold
Early fall is arguably the best time to enjoy Canyon Lake itself. The water is still warm enough for swimming and paddling, but the crowds and boat traffic that define July and August have largely cleared out.
Canyon Lake Gorge — Carved by historic 2002 flooding, this “Grand Canyon of Texas” is only accessible via guided tour through the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. Fall’s milder temperatures make the hike far more comfortable than a July visit.
Guadalupe River tubing and kayaking — The river stays enjoyable into early fall, with outfitters in nearby Gruene and New Braunfels renting tubes, kayaks, and canoes on days when the summer lines are gone.
Canyon Lake fishing — Striped bass fishing picks up as water temperatures cool, and several local guides run trips right through the fall.
Wander Gruene Historic District
A short drive from the cottages, Gruene (pronounced “Green”) is a perfectly preserved 19th-century townsite that’s especially pleasant once the summer heat lifts.
Gruene Hall, Texas’s oldest continually operating dance hall, keeps a full concert calendar into the fall — a great excuse for a date night.
Browse antique shops, the Gruene Antique Company, and boutique stores along the main strip.
Grab lunch or dinner at the Gristmill River Restaurant, with a deck overlooking the Guadalupe River.
Chase the Hill Country Wine and Beer Trail
Fall is harvest season for many area vineyards, and the cooler evenings make patio sipping much more comfortable.
Dry Comal Creek Vineyards and Times Ten Cellars are both easy day-trip distances and often host harvest-season events.
Several New Braunfels breweries add seasonal fall releases — a nice complement to an afternoon of wine tasting if your group wants variety.
Go Underground: Natural Bridge Caverns
When the Texas sun gets intense, the caverns stay a steady, cool temperature year-round — but fall is when the above-ground activities at Natural Bridge really shine too, including the zip line canopy tours and the outdoor maze, without the summer heat sapping everyone’s energy.
Find a Corn Maze or Pumpkin Patch
Once late September and October roll around, several Hill Country farms open their fall agritourism season:
Look for pumpkin patches and corn mazes in the New Braunfels and Fischer areas.
Don’t Miss Wurstfest (Mid-November)
If your stay stretches toward the back half of fall, New Braunfels’ famous ten-day Wurstfest celebration is one of the region’s biggest annual events — German food, music, dancing, and beer just a short drive from your cottage. It’s worth planning a trip around if the dates line up.

However you spend your visit, early fall might just be the most underrated season to stay with us. The heat has broken, the crowds have thinned, and the Hill Country is putting on its quiet, golden best.
